BRIEF HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF MYITKYINA
EDUCATION CENTRE FOR THE BLIND
In 1980, Associate General Secretary Saya Saw
Toe Bwe, followed by the General Secretary U
Thein Lwin went to Myitkyina With the
arrangement of the Myitkyina Christian Council
of Churches, MCFB met and negotiate with Pastors
and Bishops of various Christian denominations,
comprising of the Kachin Baptist Church,
Province Church of Myanmar (Anglican), the Roman
Catholic Church, Independent Church of Myanmar,
Christ Church and Assembly of God. The cause for
conveying this meeting is due to the fact that
the majority of Blind children who came to
Yangon for Education are Kachins.
In this year 1980, the population of the Blind
is about 10.000 in Kachin State. As a result of
this meeting, in April and May 1981, to
commemorate the International Day for the
Disable, a stage show and an open air witnessing
and Exhibition was held in the compound of the
No.3 State High School. After this stage show
and open air witnessing leaders of the Myitkyina
Christian Council became enthusiastic and formed
a committee for the implementation of a Blind
school in Myitkyina .With the joint effort of
MCFB and this comm ittee, on October 17,1981, a
house and Takkone Ward was hired and the
Myitkyina Education Centre for the Blind was
opened. President of Kachin State Council, U Paw
Yu Khar, cut the ribbon to mark the opening
ceremony.
While
opening the center in Takkone, with the effort
of the School and the committee of MCFB, on 4.5
acres of Land ,the present location of the
Myitkyina School, situated in Jamaing Khaung,
Ayemya Tharyar Qtr, was purchased and the school
was moved to there in 1982.
Thus, the Kachin Blind children can pursue their
vocational and academic training and their own
native place. For this to be implemented,
together with MCFB, Rev. Sa Boi Jum, Father
Nording, Rev. Naw Taung, U Karien Yar Kok" Daw
Nang Dwai and family rendered their help.
